Plant-Based for the Animals
Kindness is on Your Plate
Why It Matters
More than 80 billion land animals are killed for food each year. Moreover, over 90 percent are raised in factory farms. These facilities focus on profit and efficiency, not animal welfare. Most animals live in cramped cages or windowless sheds. As a result, they often face routine mutilations like tail docking and beak trimming. They are denied the ability to move freely or express natural behaviours.
Fish and other sea animals are killed in even higher numbers, estimated at an astounding 1.1 to 2.2 trillion each year. These animals are often left out of conversations about suffering. However, they also feel pain, stress, and fear during capture and slaughter.
Even “humane” or “free-range” labels often allow painful practices. No matter how they are raised, all animals in the food system are killed young, long before the end of their natural lives. In short, choosing plant-based is a meaningful way to act with kindness.
What About Dairy?
Dairy production requires separating calves from their mothers within hours—a process that’s deeply distressing for both. Cows are kept in continuous cycles of pregnancy to maintain milk supply, and most live on industrial farms where efficiency outweighs welfare. Choosing plant-based alternatives helps spare animals from this system and supports a kinder food system.
